Maintenance: Stainless steel
Kay Bojesen’s Grand Prix cutlery is made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is the definition of steel which is resistant to rust when handled correctly.
When using a dishwasher, rinse off the cutlery if the machine is not turned on straightaway. Likewise, open the dishwasher as soon as the programme is done to let out the steam of the machine. Dry off the cutlery with a dry cloth before putting it into place.
Avoid detergent with chlorine. In addition, follow the dosage instructions of the dishwasher and use the right amount of rinse aid, salt, and detergent.
If small rust spots appear on the cutlery, these can be caused by stains from other steel utensils. Rust spots can develop if steel utensils in the dishwasher are rusted, for example a cheese slider or the wire baskets of the dishwasher. The rust on these utensils can attack the other steel utensils in the dishwasher.
How to remove rust from cutlery
If rust appears in the dishwasher, the best advice is to rinse the machine with an anti-rust programme. Make also sure to remove rust stains from the cutlery with stainless steel cleaner.
The wire baskets in dishwashers are often made of iron with rubber coatings, and rust can develop if holes appear in the rubber coating. Therefore, examine the wire baskets of the dishwasher to detect any damages in the surface. The most effective way to solve the problem is to replace the damaged wire basket with a new one. Alternatively, a rusty hole can be sealed with a sealing product that tolerates water and is nontoxic after curing.
Another recommendation on how to remove rust in the dishwasher is to put a ball of tinfoil into the cutlery basket and run a dishwasher programme with crockery. The tinfoil will attract and capture the rust from the cutlery and other steel utensils in the dishwasher. Throw out the tinfoil when the programme has finished. If needed, run the programme with a tinfoil ball twice.
How to avoid rust in the dishwasher
Avoid washing non-stainless steel utensils in the dishwasher. These include most garlic presses, cheese sliders, egg slicers, strainers, lunch boxes, and graters.
Examine whether the wire baskets of the dishwasher are damaged and replace them or seal the holes with a sealing product that tolerates water and is nontoxic after curing.
Rust spots on knifes
If rust appears on the knifes but not on the forks and spoons, it can be explained with the steel type of the knifes. Dinner knifes are produced in a slightly different and ‘harder’ type of steel than the forks and spoons to make the cutting edge sharp and durable. If rust spots appear on the knifes, it is recommended that they are removed as soon as possible.
Generally, the best recommendation on how to maintain tableware is to wash it by hand. This way the surface remains beautiful and smooth for many years.
